Planning Growth You Can Actually Deliver

Growth stalls for two reasons: not enough demand, or not enough capacity to serve it well. The second is more common in businesses that have just started to succeed.

Model the constraint

Identify the resource that runs out first — delivery hours, stock, skilled staff or cash — and plan the growth curve around it rather than around the sales target.

Hire slightly ahead, carefully

Recruiting takes longer than most plans assume and new people are not productive on day one. Build both realities into the forecast before you commit to a delivery date.

Decide what you will not do

A growth plan is partly a list of refusals. Declining work that sits outside your model is often what makes the rest of the plan achievable.
